New Zealand Korean War veterans visit Korea
A group of 20 New Zealand Korean War Veterans and supporters are visiting South Korea over the period 22–29 April. They are taking part in the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA) sponsored Commonwealth Revisit Programme, including up to 200 UK, Australia and Canadian veterans and supporters as well. A highlight of the week is the Anzac Dawn service at the National War Memorial Museum on 25 April, with attendance by all the veterans and members of the New Zealand and Australian communities in Seoul. Later in the day the veterans visited and pay their respects at the Korean National War Cemetery. In the evening, the Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Mr Park Sung-choon hosted a ‘thank you’ banquet.
The veterans are having a hectic but enjoyable week, visiting the DMZ, Anzac Memorial at Kapyeong, UN cemetery in Busan and experiencing Korean culture and hospitality. While most are in their 80s, for many of them it is their first trip back to South Korea since the War. They are deeply appreciative of the assistance provided by their hosts, MPVA in enabling the visit.
