New Zealand Korean War veterans visit Korea

New Zealand veterans and supporters visiting the New Zealand memorial in Kapyeong on 24 April 2014.

A group of six New Zealand Korean War veterans and supporters visited South Korea over the period 21-26 April, taking part in a Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA)-sponsored Revisit Programme, together with other Commonwealth veterans.

A highlight of the week was the Anzac Dawn Service at the National War Memorial Museum on 25 April, with attendance from members of the New Zealand and Australian communities in Seoul.

The veterans had a hectic but enjoyable week, visiting the DMZ, Kapyeong memorials, the UN cemetery in Busan, and experiencing Korean culture and hospitality. Most veterans are in their eighties and for many it was their first trip back to South Korea since the War. They greatly admired the development of Korea since that time and were deeply appreciative of the assistance provided by their hosts.
