CER and ASEAN are each advancing regional integration agendas and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard recognise that the Australia-New Zealand CER (Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement) experience – good and bad – might offer some useful insights for ASEAN as it tackles its own, highly ambitious, economic integration process.

Since CER was launched in 1983, the value of two-way merchandise trade has grown at an average annual rate of 8 percent. Integration has generated wealth and ever-deeper integration.

On 28 June Ms. Shannon Austin, Second Secretary at the New Zealand High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, joined members of the Malaysia-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce on a visit to Terengganu state. The delegates visited Kenyir Lake, the Knowledge Park in Besut, and the Tersat Breeding and Livestock Centre.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has won the 2011 Halal Journal Award for Best Service Provider. The Halal Journal Awards, presented by former Prime Minister of Malaysia YAB Tun Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi at a gala dinner in Kuala Lumpur as part of World Halal Forum 2011, recognise outstanding achievement and innovation in the halal industry.

ANZAC Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. On 25 April 1915, young Australians and New Zealanders waded ashore at Gallipoli and began seven months of intense combat that marked the arrival of two young nations on the world stage.

On 27 February Prime Minister John Key launched the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, a global fundraiser for the recovery effort in the city and the Canterbury region.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred near the city of Christchurch in Canterbury, New Zealand, on 22 February 2011.

Immigration New Zealand is encouraging students to apply early for their visa in order to avoid processing delays, particularly in the peak processing months of February, March and July, when it receives an average of nearly 10,000 applications per month.

A condolence book has been opened at the New Zealand High Commission in memory of the 29 victims of the Pike River mining tragedy.
For people wishing to sign the book and leave messages for the victims and their families please feel free to come to the High Commission between the hours of 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Thursday or 8.30am and 4pm Friday.
 

The condolence book will be open until 4.00pm on Friday 3 December 2010.
