New Zealand and El Salvador

Political and Economic Relations

New Zealand and El Salvador share a positive relationship, with diplomatic relations dating from 2001. In January 2002, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Hon Phil Goff, visited San Salvador, the first high level bilateral visit in either direction.

New Zealand exports to El Salvador in the year to December 2008 were worth NZ$5.7 million, predominantly dairy products. There is a history of links with Massey University in the dairy sector and, more recently, El Salvador has imported live cattle from New Zealand.

For further information on the New Zealand - El Salvador bilateral relationship, please refer to the El Salvador country paper on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade website.
