New nocturnal house at Vogelpark Avifauna opened on Matariki

Thursday, 25/6/09

On 24 June the Vogelpark Avifauna in Alphen aan den Rijn, home to the only Kiwi in the Netherlands, officially opened its new Nocturnal House.
The Nocturnal House was officially opened by New Zealand Ambassador to the Netherlands, Rachel Fry, and the "Night Mayor" of The Hague, Rene Bom.

Visitors can now go on a night safari at the zoo and spot a large variety of night birds, including a Kiwi. Vogelpark Avifauna is the only zoo in the Netherlands with a Kiwi and now is the first time in 20 years that a Kiwi can be seen in the Netherlands.

On the opening day the Vogelpark Avifauna celebrated Matariki by planting fern-trees, flying kites and enjoying New Zealand food and drinks.
