Inauguration of Plaque, A&P showground at Tene, Bourail
In appreciation of the People of Bourail for their recognition of New Zealand’s efforts during WWII, and the continuing respect they show for the NZ War Cemetery and the people it commemorates, an appeal was made through the Pacific War Veterans Charitable trust at the initiative of Kevin Barron, whose father Bill was stationed in Bourail in December 1942 with the 37th Bataillon.
Bill Barron was part of the contingent of New Zealand veterans who came to Bourail last year to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the War in the Pacific. The delegation was led by Minister Woodhouse. The objective was to seek sponsorship to partly fund the project of building a pavilion that houses stables at Bourail’s A & P showground at Tene. The ceremony on 24th April at Tene was to inaugurate a scripted plaque as a reminder of the relationship and respect between the people of Bourail and the people of New Zealand, as well as in memory of the sacrifices of young New Zealanders during WWII.
