New Zealand appoints an Honorary Consul to French Polynesia

Mr Eric Malmezac has been appointed by the New Zealand Government as New Zealand’s Honorary Consul to French Polynesia.

Mr Malmezac is a respected businessman in Papeete, with involvement in the shipping and tourism industries. He has good business contacts with New Zealand and has family members based there.

Mr Malmezac was appointed on 6 October. New Zealand’s Noumea-based Consul-General to the French Pacific Territories, Simon Draper, will be in Papeete on 25 November to officially welcome Mr Malmazac to his new role.

Mr Malmezac’s role as Honorary Consul will include providing emergency assistance to New Zealanders in French Polynesia, facilitating contacts and fostering trade between New Zealand and French Polynesia, and generally promoting friendly relations between them.

New Zealand has a warm relationship with French Polynesia, and the opening of an honorary consulate in French Polynesia is a reflection of the importance New Zealand places on maintaining and building on our many ties.

There are important cultural links between Maori and Maohi, the indigenous people of French Polynesia. About 5,000 New Zealand tourists travel to Tahiti every year and New Zealand sends exports worth NZ$230 million annually. New Zealand also offers scholarships for young French Polynesians to study in New Zealand.
