New Zealand Consulate-General Noumea, New Caledonia
Premiere of "The Caledonian War" film
Friday 30 November saw the premiere of “The Caledonian War”, a film that pays tribute to the American forces stationed in New Caledonia during WWII, made to mark the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the War in the Pacific.
The film includes reference to the New Zealand presence in the French territory in that time, when New Zealand’s 3rd Division was stationed here in significant numbers of around 18,000 from 1942 until 1944. In the film, 91 year-old Gary Glynn (who attended Anzac celebrations in Noumea and at the New Zealand cemetery in Bourail this year) gave a very moving testimony of his time in New Caledonia. A large delegation of 3rd Division veterans is expected to attend 70th anniversary commemorations in New Caledonia on 25 and 26 April 2013.
