Economic Transformation Agenda
The New Zealand Government’s
Economic Transformation Agenda
seeks to progress New Zealand to a high income, knowledge-based market economy, which is both innovative and creative, and provides a unique quality of life to all New Zealanders.
Kiwi Contacts
Kiwi Contacts is a networking group in Tokyo for New Zealanders living in Japan and Japanese who are interested in New Zealand.
Their social monthly events (usually in a casual setting in a central Tokyo location) provide a great opportunity to make contacts and friendships. They also keep their members up to date on New Zealand events happening in Tokyo, and from time to time host more formal presentations and discussions on current hot topics of interest to the business community.
Arrest and Detention
Foreigners in Japan are subject to the laws of Japan and are legally accountable for acts committed here. Over recent years a small number of New Zealand citizens have been arrested mostly for matters that would be regarded as relatively minor offences in New Zealand. The Embassy cannot seek special treatment for New Zealanders that come to the attention of the Japanese authorities.

Emergency Planning and Preparedness
The New Zealand Government, through its overseas diplomatic missions, tries to assist New Zealand citizens where possible in emergency situations such as natural disasters or civil unrest. This does not diminish the obligation of New Zealanders overseas to provide for their welfare themselves, for example by taking out medical insurance, making adequate preparations, keeping themselves informed of a situation likely to affect their safety, or being prepared to meet costs incurred in rendering assistance.
