New Zealand citizenship
New Zealand citizenship carries the right to live permanently in New Zealand and hold a New Zealand passport. New Zealand citizenship can be obtained in three ways.
- Through birth in New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau and the Ross Dependency (Antarctica)
- By grant, with the approval of the Minister of Internal Affairs. (Someone who holds New Zealand residency and has lived in New Zealand for more than 5 years is eligible to apply for citizenship)
- By descent, which covers children born outside New Zealand to a parent who is a New Zealand citizen by birth or through grant.
