A taste of New Zealand in Cebu
An exciting range of New Zealand food and beverage products were on show at the three-day Cebu Food Expo from 22 to 24 July.
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), part of the New Zealand Embassy, was an exhibitor at the expo for the first time, and focused on New Zealand’s wine, meat, kiwifruit and dairy products.
The expo, now in its 11th year, is the region’s premier food and hospitality event with over 90 exhibitors from the food, travel and tourism industries.
New Zealand Trade Commissioner Net Bernales said that, while some New Zealand products were already on sale in Cebu, NZTE was optimistic that there was much more opportunity available in that market, especially as the tourism industry in Cebu was growing so quickly.
“Cebu is one of the largest commercial retail market outlets in the country, and we want to formalize our involvement through joining this expo.”
He thought that involvement in the expo would help to raise the profile of New Zealand’s high quality food and beverage products, particularly from Cebu’s hotels and restaurants.
NZTE is the New Zealand government’s national economic development agency. Its aim is to improve the international competitiveness and sustained profitability of New Zealand business and stimulate New Zealand’s economic growth.
The Philippines was New Zealand’s 14th largest export market in 2009, and its fourth largest market for dairy products. Bernales said it was hoped that trade would increase even further with the phased implementation of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement which came into force on 1 January of this year.
