Mayon volcano in Albay province erupts
New Zealanders should avoid Mayon volcano, near Legaspi City, while it continues to be active.
On 2 January 2010 the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) lowered its alert level for the Mayon volcano (Albay province) to level 3 (on a 5-point scale) however a 6-8 km Permanent Danger Zone is still in effect around the volcano.
New Zealanders in the area are advised to stay informed about developments and follow the advice of local officials. We also advise New Zealanders currently in the Philippines to register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Safetravel website.
Updates are available at the website of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
