Polish MP Visits New Zealand
Prominent Polish MP Robert Biedron’s Christmas break this year included a visit to New Zealand.
Robert and his partner, human rights lawyer Christopher Śmiszek, flew into Christchurch and described their visit there as “very emotional”, not expecting that the earthquake devastation would still be so highly visible. They then drove south for a quick look at the southern lakes and the “Lord of the Rings” country of Central Otago and, in Wanaka, met over a dinner hosted by Ambassador Wendy Hinton with Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce CEO Peter Townsend who provided insights on the Christchurch rebuild and possible commercial opportunities. Following a marathon drive up the West Coast, Robert and Christopher also spent time in Nelson and then moved onto Wellington where Robert met with senior MFAT staff and Polish Ambassador Beata Stoczyńska, made calls at Parliament and fitted in a tour of Te Papa.
A member of the Your Movement Party, Robert was elected to the Polish Parliament in October 2011 and is a member of its Foreign Affairs Committee as well as the Deputy Chair of the Justice and Human Rights Committee. He is also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and its Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination and the Committee’s general rapporteur for LGBT rights.
