New Zealand Embassy Warsaw, Poland

Promotion of the book of Father Michał Wilniewczyc

Julian Ludbrook, NZ Charge d'affaires a.i. and Anna Bednarska (one of The Pahiatua Children)

On 10 February, the „Swit” Cultural House in Warsaw organised the promotion of a book titled Kapłańska Odyseja (“Chaplain’s Odyssey”) by dr Andrzej Chibowski.

It is a biography of Father Michał Wilniewczyc, a Siberian deportee and ‘foster-father’ of a group of Polish children who were deported to Siberia, fled to Iran and consequently were invited by Prime Minister Peter Fraser to New Zealand in 1944. The book reviews Michal Wilniewczyc’s life and his stay in New Zealand and contains many photos from this period. Among the invited guests of the Warsaw promotion were the Chargé d’affaires a.i. of the New Zealand Embassy in Warsaw, and Ms. Anna Bednarska, one of the former ‘Pahiatua Children’, who returned to Poland after World War II.
