Flooding which hit southern Poland last week has spread northwards. Cities north and west of Warsaw lying near main rivers may experience flooding in the next days. Even though flood levels on the River Wisla are reportedly descending in Warsaw, residents are urged to remain vigilant as levels remain very high and enbankments are soaked. Reports advised “The most dangerous situation in Warsaw was in the Praga Port and Wawer districts [on the east bank]". Some major roads on the east bank are closed causing serious traffic difficulties in Warsaw.

High water has reached Warsaw and exceeded the Wisla river emergency levels. Reports suggest water levels may remain very high until Sunday evening possibly causing leaking or breaking of the river banks.

There are incidences of severe flooding in areas of Poland, mainly in the south. The high water levels are moving north. Flooding has caused some disruption to train and road transport.

The annual ANZAC Day commemorations took place in Warsaw, Pilsudskiego Square at noon on Monday, 26 April. The ceremony included remembrance speeches by Dr Penelope Ridings, the New Zealand Ambassador and Ms Ruth Pearce, the Australian Ambassador, which were followed by a wreath laying.

Volcanic ash clouds from an eruption in Iceland have disrupted flights throughout much of Europe including Poland and the Baltic States. 

Airspace restrictions are currently being reviewed and it is anticipated that some (but not all) European airports may be operational again in coming days.

Volcanic ash cloud disrupts plans to attend State Funeral in Poland

The volcanic dust cloud that caused the cancellation of flights across Europe has forced Governor-General, Hon Sir Anand Satyanand, to abandon attempts to attend the State Funeral of the President of Poland.
Sir Anand left New Zealand on Thursday night to attend the State Funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria Kaczynska in Krakow on Sunday.

New Zealand will be represented by the Governor-General the Hon Sir Anand Satyanand at the state funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria Kaczynska.

"We cherish our friendship with Poland," Acting Prime Minister Bill English said today. "The loss of so many distinguished people is a tragedy for Poland, which is felt all round the world.

10:11 a.m. | A remembrance ceremony was held in Auckland this morning for Polish President Lech Kaczynski and 95 other people killed in a plane crash in Russia last week. 

Auckland City Council hosted members of the region's Polish community at Auckland Town Hall for the ceremony.
