Character and Police Certificates

If you are a New Zealand citizen requesting law enforcement information to secure residence or employment in South Africa, or elsewhere you will need to complete an application form for Law Enforcement Information. Application forms can be obtained from the New Zealand High Commission in Pretoria or via the New Zealand Police website.

The New Zealand High Commission does not issue character or clearance certificates. All applications must be made to the New Zealand Police Headquarters.

Due to statutes regulating the privacy of information, Police are not permitted to release information relating to criminal history checks to the applicant. The police are, however, authorized to provide such information directly to any Embassy, Consulate or Immigration Service, providing the subject has authorized in writing the release of the information.

All requests must be made in writing, specifying the reason for which the information is required and include the person’s full name, date & place of birth, sex, nationality and current address. A written authority signed by the person concerned, permitting the Police to make such disclosure to a named government authority, must also accompany the request.
