Wreath laid by former All Black at Anglo-Boer War Memorial Site

Former All Black, Ian Jones, visited the Anglo-Boer War Memorial site at Langverwacht in December 2009 and laid a wreath in commemmoration of the 23 young NZ men who lost their lives in 1902.

The Honourable Mr John Motaung, Mayor of the local town of Vrede, also laid a wreath in a small ceremony which was attended by a number of the local community, including Elsie van Reenen, owner of the farm where the memorial is located. Piet van Zyl, who was present when the bodies were disinterred and reburied in the Vrede cemetery in 1965, was also present. Robin Smith, local war historian, read the Ode to the Fallen.

Mr Jones was in South Africa as part of the SKY NZ TV team covering the All Black Springbok 2009 Tri Nations rugby tests.
