New Zealand's Ambassador climbs Sweden's highest mountain
The New Zealand flag fluttered proudly at the top of Sweden's highest mountain last weekend. The Ambassador, Barbara Bridge, and her partner Wolfgang Mitterecker were part of a small group of friends and colleagues who scaled Mt Kebnekaise (2107m) on 17 July. The expedition on the day took 13 hours, and included rockclimbing with harnesses and helmets and crossing glaciers roped together to prevent disappearance into the many crevasses. A significant advantage was that since Kebnekaise is in the far north of Sweden in the Arctic Circle it is light throughout the night at this time of year - so there was no need for a race against darkness on the homeward journey!
