Pacific dialogue: Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation

On Friday 15 November the NZ Permanent Mission in Geneva co-hosted an event with UNISDR and the UNOG Library, which put the spotlight on the extreme vulnerability of Pacific small island states to natural disaster and climate change.

Moderated by Margareta Wahlström (the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction) and featuring David Sheppard (Director General, Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)) and His Excellency Moses K. Mosé (Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Solomon Islands) as key note speakers, this event outlined the practical steps that SPREP and Pacific small island states are putting in place to increase their resilience in the face of natural disasters and climate change.

This interactive discussion was extremely well attended and brought international experts, permanent missions representatives and the NGO community together to recognise the work happening in the Pacific and to discuss the opportunities exist for further collaboration.
