New Look New Zealand Passports

New Zealand is about to introduce a new style of passport for its citizens.

The new passport is unique and features a black cover with silver fern logo and silver embossing. The passport also contains a variety of new and enhanced security features. The passports are machine readable and electronic (e-passport) capable. While the passport photograph of the bearer is shown in black and white, it is still necessary to provide two colour passport size photographs when applying for a new passport. The new passports will have a validity period of 5 years.

Current passports will remain valid until the expiry date printed on the biodata (photo) page, or become full, and can then be replaced with the new style. While the minimum requirement is 3 months validity remaining, Thailand and many other countries require passports to have 6 months validity remaining on them upon arrival in the country. All passports are produced in NZ (or Sydney and London) so if you are obtaining a replacement passport you should allow 4 weeks for processing and return delivery.
