Tropical Cyclone Ian: Advice for travellers

On Saturday 11th January, the northern part of Tonga’s Ha’apai island group was devastated by Tropical Cyclone Ian.  TC Ian passed over Ha’apai as a category 4 cyclone.  On some islands, over 70 percent of buildings were damaged or destroyed. Relief efforts are under way.

New Zealand travellers considering a visit or stay in Ha’apai should contact their accommodation provider or tour company in the first instance to ascertain whether they are operating following the cyclone and whether their facilities have been affected. If the decision is made to continue with travel to Ha’apai, please register your details on www.safetravel.govt.nz
