Canterbury Earthquake

For information on the magnitude 6.3 earthquake that hit Christchurch on 22 February; details on how to contact family and friends in Christchurch; and updates regarding donations and events taking place in the UK and Ireland. 

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit Christchurch at 12:51pm on 22 February and aftershocks have caused significant damage to the Christchurch Central Business District. A national state of emergency has now been declared.

Contacting family and friends in Christchurch

The New Zealand Red Cross has launched a Person Enquiry Line. If you are phoning from outside New Zealand call +64 7 850 2199. We urge people to call this number only if you have a genuine concern for a friend or relative who you believe to be in the Christchurch area. People phoning from within New Zealand should call 0800 733 276.

Those concerned about British nationals in New Zealand should contact the Foreign and Commonwealth office, on +44 (0) 20 7008 8765 who provide consular assistance to British citizens abroad.

Those concerned for Irish nationals in New Zealand should contact the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin, on +353 (01) 418 0222.

Memorial Service

An official Christchurch Earthquake Memorial Service for the victims of the February 22 earthquake will be held in London at Westminster Abbey, on Sunday 27 March 2011. Due to high levels of interest from members of the New Zealand community in the UK attending the Memorial, the High Commission will run a ballot for tickets to attend.
