A magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit Christchurch at 12:51pm on 22 February and aftershocks have caused significant damage to the Christchurch Central Business District. A national state of emergency has now been declared.

We urge people to call this number only if you have a genuine concern for a friend or relative who you believe to be in the Christchurch area. An official Christchurch Earthquake Memorial Service for the victims of the February 22 earthquake will be held in London at Westminster Abbey, on Sunday 27 March 2011. Due to high levels of interest from members of the New Zealand community in the UK attending the Memorial, the High Commission will run a ballot for tickets to attend.
