The New Zealand Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is seeking expressions of interest from young New Zealanders who are interested in representing New Zealand at Commonwealth Day in London on Monday 11 March 2013.
Applicants need to be aged between 18 to 25 years, have strong leadership skills, an interest in the Commonwealth and parliamentary affairs, and be already in London on Commonwealth Day.
The theme of this year’s Commonwealth Day is “Opportunity Through Enterprise” and the one-day programme will include:
- discussions on the Commonwealth and specifically on the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and our contribution to parliamentary democracy;
- short debates or other presentations on current critical issues in the Commonwealth;
- attendance at the Observance at Westminster Abbey, with Her Majesty The Queen as Head of the Commonwealth present and all Commonwealth High Commissioners in London; and
- possible attendance at the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s evening reception in the presence of Her Majesty.
New Zealand has been invited to nominate two young people to attend this event.
Chairperson of the New Zealand CPA Group, Hon Annette King, said this is a great opportunity for New Zealand to be represented on the international stage by our emerging young leaders.
“Past representatives to this event have found their attendance at Commonwealth Day extremely worthwhile and we look forward to being able to provide this opportunity again to some of our talented youth”, she said.
Applicants should send their name, age, occupation, and a short explanation of why they would like to represent New Zealand on Commonwealth Day to the New Zealand Branch of the CPA at cpa@parliament.govt.nz by 20 January 2013. Please note the successful applicants will need to meet all travel and accommodation costs associated with attendance at this event.
