New Zealanders who hold Order of British Empire honours are invited to attend a church service to be held in London early next year for its members—but they need to apply quickly for a ticket.

Prayers will be offered for Christchurch during Evensong at Westminster Abbey next year on February 21 2012 to mark the one year anniversary of the February 22 earthquake.


On 22 February 2011, Christchurch and the surrounding area were struck by an earthquake that caused severe damage and tragic casualties.

Localised civil unrest has been occurring at night in parts of London since 6 August when a protest against the police shooting of a man in Tottenham turned violent. Riot police have been deployed to contain the unrest which has seen vehicles, rubbish bins and buildings set alight and shops looted. At times there have been violent clashes between rioters and the police.
