NZ Ambassador attends "Duffy Books in Homes" giveaway in Virginia
This Friday, New Zealand Ambassador Mike Moore will attend a charity event which will see over 24,000 books being delivered to deserving local students in Virginia.
Attending as a guest of honour, Ambassador Moore is a strong supporter of philanthropic activity and encourages New Zealand businesses in the US to give back to the communities in which they operate.
At this event, New Zealand global logistics provider, Mainfreight, will help Duffy Books in Homes USA deliver the books. Mainfreight USA, along with CaroTrans, will deliver the new, hard-cover books by
tractor delivery to Alexandria Central School District students at the “Duffy Books in Homes USA’s Bonus Books Presentation” Friday 20 May at 10.30am.
The estimated value of the books exceeds $120,000.
“This is a wonderful initiative,” said Ambassador Moore. “It is an excellent illustration how strong the New Zealand / U.S. relationship is – this relationship operates on every level.”
Duffy Books in Homes USA is a not-for-profit organization, which addresses the problem of “booklessness” in homes across America. In its aim to ensure that all children have access to books, it provides children who are in need with free quality books.
Once the books arrive at Alexandria Central School, students are welcome to select the books that appeal to them, and take them home to keep and enjoy at their leisure.
