Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully today announced New Zealand is contributing $17 million toward improving shipping services and port facilities in Vanuatu.

The Vanuatu Inter-Island Shipping Support Project is a joint initiative between New Zealand, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Vanuatu.

“Shipping services are a lifeline in the Pacific, connecting communities, moving goods to market and supporting the tourism industry,” Mr McCully says.

It is an honour for me to represent the New Zealand Government at the opening of this Strategic Tourism Stakeholders Forum, which will discuss the future direction of the tourism sector in Vanuatu.

I understand that you will be discussing and providing feedback on a draft Strategic Tourism Action Plan.

This is an important document, and it needs to be informed by your views as representatives of Vanuatu's tourism sector. And as individuals who want to see tourism grown in Vanuatu in a way that is sustainable and that benefits the country and its people.

Thankyou for inviting me to participate in the 60th Diamond Anniversary of Onesua Presbyterian College and to open this new multi-purpose sports court.

New Zealand has a close and special relationship with Onesua Presbyterian College and the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu.

This relationship started when the missionary, Peter Milne, came from New Zealand to Nguna Island in 1870 to establish the Presbyterian Mission in Vanuatu.
