New Zealand Embassy Ha Noi, Viet Nam

Applying/renewing a New Zealand passport

The Embassy does not issue passports.  New Zealand passports can only be issued in Wellington, London or Sydney (applications from Viet Nam are processed in Wellington).

The Department of Internal Affairs provides information on passports including changes to the issue of New Zealand passports and machine readable passports.

The Safe Travel website has information about New Zealand passports including renewing a New Zealand passport while overseas.

Completed passport applications may be sent directly to the Passport Office at Department of Internal Affairs in New Zealand or they may be sent via the New Zealand Embassy, for a fee.

Sending passport application direct to New Zealand

You can apply for a new passport or passport renewal by sending your application direct to New Zealand.  You need to pay by credit card, and include the return courier fee.

The Passport office in New Zealand will send the passport to a residential address in Viet Nam or to the New Zealand Embassy in Ha Noi (please advise the Embassy if you intend to use this option, so as we know how to contact you when your new passport arrives).

Please ensure your passport application is correctly completed, if your application is incomplete this will delay processing in New Zealand.

Applying for a New Zealand passport via the Embassy

The Embassy can submit your application to Wellington for processing via the diplomatic bag.  This service takes approximately four weeks to process from the receipt of the correctly completed application form.  This will cost an additional fee of NZD$50 for sending the application via the diplomatic bag in addition to the passport processing fees stated in the application forms.

Please ensure your passport application is correctly completed, if your application is incomplete this will delay processing in New Zealand.

Applications are sent to New Zealand every Thursday afternoon in the diplomatic bag.

Retaining your current passport

You are now able to retain your existing passport whilst the application for a replacement passport is being processed.  Please advise the Embassy if you wish to travel on your existing passport at this time, so as we can advise DIA.  Once the new passport is received by the Embassy, you will need to submit your old passport for cancellation before being issued with the new passport.  The old passport can be returned to you once it has been cancelled.
