New Zealand and Vietnamese researchers and experts meet to discuss major regional political and security issues

Researchers and experts from New Zealand and Viet Nam will meet in Ha Noi on 5 December for the 5th annual Track Two dialogue between the two countries.

The Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam will co-chair the event with the Asia New Zealand Foundation (www.asianz.org.nz), a non-government organisation that promotes stronger understanding and contacts between New Zealand and Asia.  Foundation Executive Director Mr John McKinnon will lead the New Zealand delegation, which also includes academics from Canterbury, Waikato and Victoria universities.

New Zealand Ambassador H.E. Haike Manning says the Track Two dialogue provides a valuable opportunity for both countries to explore current ‘hot’ regional and bilateral issues; and enables the two governments to hear different perspectives from academics who are expert in their field.

“New Zealand and Viet Nam already engage regularly on these topics at official or ‘Track One’ level.  But these are major issues that deserve further attention, to ensure that both countries are making our best possible contributions to regional peace, security and prosperity” says Ambassador Manning.

This year’s dialogue will focus on issues such as the changing strategic environment in East Asia, regional situations such as the East Sea / South China Sea, major power relations in the Asia-Pacific, and Viet Nam – New Zealand bilateral relations in the new strategic context.

The New Zealand delegation will also strengthen links with other Vietnamese research institutes during their time in Ha Noi.
