Passing of Former Governor-General Sir Paul Reeves
It is with deep sadness that we advise of the death of the former Governor-General of New Zealand Sir Paul Reeves who passed away in Auckland on Sunday 14 August 2011 aged 78.
Sir Paul was Governor-General from 1985 till 1990, and was the first Maori and the first cleric to fill that position. He is survived by his wife, Beverly, Lady Reeves, his three daughters, Sarah, Bridget and Jane, and six grandchildren.
Sir Paul was a highly respected leader within Maoridom, the State and the Church. He also built a notable international profile including through having served as Chair of the Nelson Mandela Trust and Chair of the Fiji Constitution Review Commission.
Prime Minister John Key has announced that the State Funeral to honour former Governor-General Sir Paul Reeves will be held in Auckland at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Trinity corner of Parnell Road and St Stephens Avenues, Auckland at 11am on Thursday 18 August 2011.
