HMNZS Te Mana visited Ho Chi Minh City 27 June - 1 July on a goodwill port visit as part of a wider Asian tour. The visit was the fourth naval ship visit to Viet Nam and the first since 2006. Te Mana's visit afforded the opportunity for navy/navy courtesy calls as well as a call on the HCMC People's committee by the Commanding Officer. Outreach activities undertaken in association with the visit included a visit to a girl's home in HCMC that has been supported by the New Zealand community for a number of years as well as sporting events. The ship was also opened to visitors.

The New Zealand Embassy made further progress to strengthen New Zealand’s relationship with Da Nang recently, when Deputy Head of Mission Alistair Crozier made a visit there on 23-24 May together with business development manager Ms Tran Phuong Nga from the New Zealand Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City.

Christchurch was hit by further large earthquakes on 13 June, almost four months after the 22 February quake that caused widespread damage and fatalities in the city.

Three New Zealand Police trainers were in Hanoi from 18-22 April to deliver a tactical medical training course to officers from the Ministry of Public Security.

The course was an agreed activity under a Cooperative Arrangement on Countering Trans-National Crime concluded between NZ Police and MPS in 2010, and was funded by the New Zealand Government’s Asia Security Fund.

Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade and NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade CEO Mr John Allen visited Hanoi on 18-19 April for talks with Vietnamese counterparts.

A primary aim of the visit was to participate in Foreign Ministry Consultations with a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Vice Minister H.E. Mr Dao Viet Trung.

The Combined ASEAN / New Zealand Business Council undertook a trade mission to Viet Nam 1-10 March 2011. This was the first mission to take place to Viet Nam under the trading regime agreed under the ASEAN/Australia/New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA). It comprised 11 members led by Sir Kenneth Stevens, CEO Glidepath Group Ltd, drawn from the construction, aviation services, and food and beverage sectors, all three considered to offer high potential for New Zealand exporters.

On 22 March the Government of Viet Nam confirmed that it would make a donation of US$50,000 to New Zealand in response to the earthquake that killed over 165 people and caused widespread damage in Christchurch on 22 February.

On 21st January 2011, the New Zealand Embassy in Hanoi held a pre-departure briefing for NZDS awardees who were about to depart to undertake their post graduate study in New Zealand in early 2011. The briefing aims to provide the NZDS awardees with the information on their entitlements and obligations, accommodation, customs procedures, health insurance, arrival and living in New Zealand as well as the most recent changes of New Zealand immigration policy applied to the NZDS awardees.

New Zealand Prime Minister Rt Hon John Key and Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon Murray McCully returned to Viet Nam last week, for a bilateral visit to Ho Chi Minh City followed by attendance at the Fifth East Asia Summit and related meetings in Hanoi.
