Disaster Risk Management

Childfund NZ Sustainable Livelihoods and Water and Sanitation Projects

In 2012 we started implementation of a NZ$5.5 million 5 year community DRM activity in Ben Tre Province in the Mekong Delta. The activity is being implemented by Oxfam and focuses on increasing the resilience and adaptive capacity of poor people, especially women, and local authorities to disaster and climate risks in coastal communities in the Mekong Delta of Viet Nam. The project will achieve this outcome through introducing innovative, integrated and effective interventions at the commune level focused on DRM, water and sanitation, and livelihoods adaptation. The lessons from the project are directly feeding into Viet Nam’s community based disaster risk management strategy.

Also in 2012 we started implementation of a 2 year NZ$ 2.5 million project focused on developing and piloting a prototype system for dam and disaster management based on NZ best practice public and private sector experience to be rolled out across Viet Nam. The project is a three way strategic partnership between NZ Crown Research Institute GNS Science, NZ engineering company Damwatch NZ, and the Ha Noi Water Resources University.
